Saving water with Thomas Crapper’s valveless waste preventer cistern

The history of the Thomas Crapper man and brand is well known in the bathroom world having begun life in the 1860’s.  Then and now, every product is made with quality, craftmanship, innovation and intelligence at the very core. Today, even after considerable advances in technology over the past century and more, the way the original Thomas Crapper valveless waste preventer operates means it is still the best way of saving water in the WC. Quite simply, no valve means no undetected leaks. Water is obviously wasted when a valve leaks, especially as the user does not always realise it is happening.  Thomas Crapper’s use of the syphon system eliminates this issue and, as such, is specified due to today’s…

How to fix a running toilet

Is water constantly running into your toilet? The sound of constant water running into the pan is not only annoying and a waste of money but also worrying that a bigger leak is on the way. It is easy to spot when the valve is leaking badly but often a little seep can occur without being noticed. The best way to check if water is seeping through causing the noise is to dry the bowl of the toilet and then put a piece of toilet paper in the bowl somewhere above the water line. Then after a few minutes you should be able to see if the paper is collecting water and this is a strong indication that the valve…

Thomas Crapper & Co Basins

Thomas Crapper – the iconic British brand then and now

Thomas Crapper & Co Ltd. was founded by Thomas himself in London in 1861. The business supplied and installed bathroom and plumbing products throughout London; as such, he was responsible for many improvements in sanitary conditions and bathrooms in general. These include: Ball-cock flushing valves. Various waste-water valve mechanisms (syphons). Drainage and underground plumbing traps, to improve hygiene. The bathroom showroom concept. The world’s first bathroom showroom boasted plumbed-in toilets so that clients could ‘try before they buy’. It also had huge plate-glass windows to show off the stock.  Such a display was market-leading and daring at a time when bodily functions were never acknowledged in polite company. In 1886, the company was engaged by The Royal Household to design…
