The Double Thunderbox!
|
|

The owners of an extraordinary Irish country house hotel visited us in order to purchase some of our sanitaryware for several of the guest rooms. Castle Leslie, in County Monaghan, is owned and run by the Leslie family who have lived there since the 1660s.
Both the Leslies and the castle can be described as somewhat eccentric, so we were not surprised when our Irish visitors were captivated by our limited-edition ‘Thunderboxes’: wooden-panelled replicas of the classic Upper Crust lavatory.
When asked by the family for a truly memorable loo for the ladies’ cloakroom, our managing director made the lighthearted remark that as so many women visit the lavatory in pairs, perhaps we should make a DOUBLE THUNDERBOX! A few weeks later, we received an order for several Thunderboxes, and “One of your special double versions”. Reluctantly, we agreed. It was surprisingly difficult to make and it cost us a small fortune, but it is great fun and it is now a star attraction. See the Castle Leslie web-site at www.castleleslie.com
Shortly afterwards, our chief cabinet-maker resigned due to sickness. He was sick of making Thunderboxes. However, do stay in touch if you want a magnificent polished wooden W.C.; they will return to Crapper & Co.’s range.

Our 'standard' Thunderbox, shown here in oak but also available in mahogany and walnut. No longer in production, although we hope to re-introduce a similar model before too long. Please contact us for further details.
